Starboy is one dedicated artiste who has benefited from this artistic dream and shares his vision in this industry.

I’m Joseph Kioko aka “Starboy” I stay in Mukuru Kwa Reuben, an Actor, Fine artist, freestyle inline skater and a web/graphics designer. Currently working as a consultant at WTZ Shujaaz.
Could you describe one of your typical work days as an artiste?
I do my art on Saturday, painting in the morning hours, acting in the afternoon. On Sunday find me at Sunken Park where I do my skating, I also teach adults and kids how to skate. Then Monday to Friday am at the office doing graphics.
What skills and personal attributes are required to become a valuable artiste?
Consistence, passion, devotion and love for the art.
What parts of your artwork do you find most challenging?
Waiting for the fruits of my art.
What do you find most enjoyable?
Interacting, learning new tricks and implementing them.
Are there any negatives in your career in arts, mention any?
Lack of appreciation and recognition.
Kindly share some of the projects you’ve accomplished so far.
I have sold more than ten pieces of art and I have some at home ready for the market. I have a group of skaters I have taught how to skate from step 1 and I’ve also done over 20 logos, countless design works and photo editing for various clients.
Which seasons of the year are toughest as an artiste?
The beginning of the year is obviously the toughest, people have no time for arts because they have to make money for their basic needs.
How would you describe government support for your field?
No support at all, we just depend on our personal efforts.
Is this industry growing enough to accommodate those with a dream like yours?
Yes it is.
Why do some people leave this industry?
Lack of support, most of them give up since you don’t enjoy the outcome of art immediately.
Who inspires you most in the industry today?
In painting its Patrick Mukabi and in acting Morgan freeman inspires me
What is the position of ladies and people with disabilities in the industry today?
50% because the industry accommodates all persons, success depends on one’s own effort and passion.
Are there opportunities for self-employment in your field? Kindly expound on this.
Yeah, like in fine art I make my artworks and find how to sell them on my own, to me that is self-employment.
How did you start earning from your dream as an artist?
By attending gigs and exhibitions carrying my paintings with me and showcasing them. In skating I opened a Facebook page where I started advertising my brand as a skater and people were interested and started following up and coming for training.
How long does it take for one to rise to the top as an artiste?
According to me, it depends on your luck and dedication. If not that you have to part with some cash to get the exposure.
Is there anything else you think an ambitious youth would need to know about arts?
Art pays, thats all.
